Does anyone know if there are other alternatives/cheaper options for the SIMATIC MV320 and SIMATIC MV325 to scan a QR-code and use that data in a Siemens 1500 plc?

MV320/325 is a handheld 1D/2D barcode scanner right? And as far as I can see, it has only USB communication? Are you looking for a replacement (in terms of keeping it on USB) or with enhanced comms like Profinet? In that case Profinet enabled scanners will cost you at least twice; for example Sick GLS6 or IFM o2i510 around €1000. You may also want to check out the website at Turck for devices from Banner Engineering.

Yes MV320 and MV325 are handheld scanners. I am looking for an alternative that also uses USB communication indeed. I have read (on another forum) that it ‘should’ be possible to plug in a USB barcode scanner into the HMI, but don’t know if they are referring to a non-Siemens barcode scanner. So is it possible to use non-Siemens barcode scanners with USB communication into a Siemens HMI?

It will probably work. Maybe you need to install a specific driver for the scanner. The HMI is running an embedded windows-version.
